It is by walking the trails that you can escape, disconnect from your routine and breathe in the essence of Nature. These landscaped areas make you forget the small worries of everyday life thanks to the beauty of the breathtaking views that nature shares with us.


Whether it is to discover unknown corners of the country, or for sporting purposes of training and surpassing oneself, playing in the trails is a pleasure shared by many outdoor enthusiasts.


In the last few years, we have seen an increase in the number of trail users. Due to a lack of preparation, knowledge and experience, some experiences in the forest go wrong. Therefore, before getting started, it is preferable to be prepared to face this environment in order to wander safely.


Here are a few tips that may help you.

Preparation

It would be wise to choose a trail according to your abilities. It is nice to push yourself to reach the highest peaks, but some novices should enjoy shorter hikes, with a lower elevation gain to start the season without injuries and bad experience. So, distance and elevation gain should be taken into consideration, depending on your physical condition and experience.


But, that doesn't mean less pretty. The Visitor Services will provide you with all the information you need to make a wise choice on your itinerary, which is well identified and marked. Why not with a trail map? By surfing the Web, many parks already provide useful information to help you choose your destination: length of the hike, services offered, elevation gain, etc. This will minimize the possibility of getting lost, as we occasionally see.  It is always good to have a route plan and to be accompanied. As the saying goes, "two is better".

Take care of your footwear by choosing shoes and socks adapted to the activity. You will walk on dirt, mud, gravel, sand and sometimes wet rocks before arriving at your destination. So dress your feet properly, they deserve it because without them, you are nothing in this environment.

To improve the stability of your movements, there is no shame in using walking sticks. This tool will save you energy, while adding extra propulsion. Most poles are made of lightweight aluminum, are adjustable in length and add a degree of comfort. Why not?

Hydration

In any season, sports activity means sweating. And this is even more true in the summer. Hydration is very important. Take the necessary amount of water with you. Various containers are possible, from the classic reusable water bottle to the hydrapack, which fits wonderfully into most backpacks. Considering that one liter of water weighs one kilo, this water will probably be the heaviest load you will have to carry with you. And, it is more than necessary. Perhaps a filter to purify the water in the lakes and rivers along your route would be in order depending on the length of your hike.


You will also have to burn calories with this activity. So, bring some food to make up for this lack. Food that is easily transportable and quickly consumable. That being said, it is always nice to offer yourself a little snack as a reward once you reach your destination, which will amplify your happiness once you reach the summit, making the moment even more memorable.

Adapt to Mother Nature with the right clothes

Since we live in a country with rapid climate changes, we must be able to deal with the whims of Mother Nature. It is essential to have the right clothing to protect yourself from the elements. At the top of a mountain, the wind hits hard and you have to protect yourself from it. Sweat combined with wind chill, the calculation is easy to do. Another point to consider is the temperature difference from your starting point. Think of it as a six degree drop in temperature for every thousand meters of elevation gain. This is a small fact that can be interesting to remember. Be prepared without necessarily overloading yourself: light clothing, windbreaker or raincoat, hat or cap will be appropriate.

Choosing the right backpack

After talking about hydration, food and clothing, you now have to carry it all. The backpack must fit your body type. There are so many of them. Of various sizes, for various activities, for men, for women and at all prices. It is preferable to get advice in an outdoor store in order to choose the right one, target the activity and especially try before you buy.

The survival instructor in me can only suggest that you add a pocket knife, lighter or waterproof match and a first aid kit to your gear. An essential in my humble opinion. These are just a few things to consider before hitting the trails, but how important.


In order to enjoy your hikes, preparation is essential. It will only enhance your travels and allow you to access a multitude of magical areas that are just waiting to be discovered.


Imagine the excitement of reaching a summit that offers an indescribable view that only your senses can appreciate.
