As you probably already know, I am one of those crazy guys from the outside. The tough and rough kind. Coming from a genetic where things tend to break in my hands for no apparent reason. That's just to make myself feel better. So needless to say, what ends up in my backpack is pretty solid, because anything that breaks doesn't belong there. It's almost as if the limited space in my backpack has to be earned.
From an idea to a sample product
Maybe that's why my Chlorophylle family has been testing several of their products for me for over 4 years now. But before I explain my "tester" mission, let's see what happens between an idea for clothing and the shelves of an outdoor store.
At first, the idea will be digitally created by product designers. In line with Chlorophylle's values, they will carefully choose the fabrics, specific features, and cut for the intended activity of the garment. Is it a suit designed for hiking, cross-country skiing, or snowboarding? Every detail is meticulously thought out to offer an optimal experience to its future user.
Then, the plans will be sent to the manufacturer who will make the first sample of the product. Once it arrives, it will undergo a thorough evaluation by the design team. Is the fabric the right one? Are there any missing features in the product? Are there too many? Are the seams in the right place? It's time to think about a 2.0 version of the original idea.
Next, this is usually where I come in. I will wear the prototype in order to identify any potential technical details that need to be adjusted. Usually, the garment will be worn for several weeks, even months. But since I'm not easy on my clothes, if something is wrong, it's quickly noticed. And needless to say, my favorite clothes are practical and very durable.
How does a test bench work?
During this test time, I will be testing many technical details such as:
- Resistance to abrasion
- Evacuation of perspiration
- Efficiency of ventilation zones
- Insulating capacity of the product
- Friction points
- Waterproofness
- Resistance of seams
- Quality of zippers
- Does the product's cut correspond well to the activities for which it is intended?
- Ease of use of adjustments
- Are the elastic bands appropriate?
- Wear and tear of velcro
The product is taken to visit all types of terrain, all seasons and all imaginable conditions. Yes, there is a lot of work behind the scenes before a product reaches you, dear consumer.
Special requests
As an ambassador, I can also make certain comments or special requests. I am truly lucky. For example, one of my wishes was to get the Tundra set, which is a down overall and jacket. Ultra-insulated and compressible, the set has specific technical features that meet my needs. It is so warm that I wouldn't even need a sleeping bag for winter camping. Yes, I tested it, of course. It's the kind of set you can wear on Everest for comparison. I can put it on without taking off my boots, I can also fit two bottles in the inner pockets to keep my water liquid or use them as hot water bottles. I can even go to the bathroom without taking off the set, which is really convenient at -32°C during this test.
As you can see, I record all this data to make a nice summary that will be transmitted to the design team for adjustments.
Product launch
The next step will be to process orders, check what can be adjusted, evaluate the costs it may represent, and then finalize our product in version 2.0, and finally place the final order with the manufacturer. As you can see, many steps take place before a product becomes a reality. All this is to provide you with the best possible clothing quality when you choose your Chlorophylle clothing.
