The eternal question comes year after year. What jacket will I wear this winter? Will it be warm enough? The cold season is just over the horizon, which means it's time to start thinking about the jacket you'll be wearing for the next few months. If you don't know where to start when choosing your winter jacket, this article will help you make an informed decision.
What kind of winter jacket do you need?
If there was one jacket that would do all the things you want to do, that would be great. But in reality, most people have different needs for their coats. For example, if you're considering a parka as your primary winter coat, think about the type of activities you'll do with it. Will you mostly be walking around town? Or will you spend a lot of time in the mountains and hiking? Do you plan to be active outdoors every day? Or only occasionally? Your lifestyle should be part of your consideration when choosing the type of coat.
Here are the types of winter jackets that we offer:
Urban winter jackets and parkas
Generally, urban coats or jackets for daily use have a longer fit. These are warm coats and parkas that can protect you from the weather and cold. They are usually equipped with a hood and a double zipper to move freely. They can also have several pockets for convenience. At Chlorophylle, we care about the environment and that's why we use materials such as recycled polyester and nylon, Repreve, and RDS down to make our winter coats.

Winter Jackets for Snow Sports
We offer winter jackets in a variety of lengths and styles, including jackets for skiing and snowboarding. Our snow sports jackets are generally shorter than everyday jackets and have a sporty style. Technical and performance oriented, they have several features designed for skiing or snowboarding. These include a snow skirt, an interior mesh goggle pocket with wiper, underarm vents and interior cuffs with thumbhole. They're versatile, so they can be worn for other things, like going to work or running errands.

Mid-layers and waterproof shells.
Jackets that are part of the multi-layer system such as waterproof shells and mid-layers are perfect for people who like to be outdoors and participate in winter activities.
The shell is the technical coat that will protect you from wind, rain and snow. It will allow your layers underneath to perform better and help you keep warm. Typically, shells are made of 3 ply, offer greater resistance and perform better even in cold temperatures. If you want a technical jacket that is lightweight, compressible and breathable, you can use it in the summer as well as the winter. Carry it in your backpack so you have it on hand if the wind picks up or the elements get rough.
The mid-layer is an insulated jacket that will give you the warmth you need when the mercury drops. It can be insulated with synthetic or down. It is usually worn alone in spring and fall, but can be layered with a shell in winter.
Remember, these technical coats can be used year-round but layered in winter and are designed for intense physical activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or ski touring.
Which insulation material will keep you warmer: synthetic or down?
Down and synthetics are the two main types of insulation used for winter coats. Now, which insulation should you choose?
Down coats contain feathers, goose or duck down that trap air inside the lining. Down has the advantage of being warmer, lighter and more compressible than synthetic insulation. The #1 enemy of down is moisture. When it is too wet, down becomes saturated and loses its ability to trap air and keep you warm. Down coats are suitable for medium to low intensity activities.
Jackets with synthetic insulation have the advantage of wicking sweat away from the fabric and drying quickly. These garments are more resistant to humidity. Generally less expensive than down, they are easy to maintain. Intense or aerobic activities will be well suited to synthetic insulation.
There are now high-performance down and synthetic insulation blends. For example, Primaloft Gold insulation is light, dries 4 times faster than regular down and offers all the warmth sought after in down. It offers the same warmth, softness, lightness and compressibility of down with all the advantages of synthetic materials.
What about the technical details of the winter coat?
Every jacket has several or many technical details. These extra features add value to the coat.
Pockets: Consider the location, number, size and orientation of your jacket's pockets. A lined pocket can provide extra warmth, especially if you are not wearing gloves.
Hood: A hood offers extra protection from rain and snow in cold weather. Some coats have a removable hood, which makes them easier to wear in warmer weather.
Coat Adjustments: Each coat has its own set of adjustments that can be made, whether it's adjusting the hood, tightening the waist, or adjusting the cuffs. Make sure you go through all these adjustments that can make a difference in warmth.
Underarm Openings: Underarm openings are useful when you're doing outdoor activities because they allow air to circulate and release excess heat. Our waterproof shells and snow sports jackets are especially equipped with these openings.
How do I choose the right size winter coat?
Winter weather often requires us to wear multiple layers under our outerwear. We need to allow room for these extra layers of warmth. A coat that is not loose enough, even if it is very warm, can make you feel cold. You need to have enough room for air to circulate and warm up better. But be careful, too big is not better. You need to be able to move and move around freely.
If you buy online, check the size chart. If the size of the coat doesn't fit, don't worry, we have a free return policy.
How do I know if my coat will be warm enough?
We assign a comfort rating to all our winter coats. This rating indicates the level of comfort offered by that particular product. We base it on the quality of the materials used, the amount of insulation, the fit and construction. A high comfort rating (lowest temperature) means that the product offers excellent protection against cold, wind, rain and snow.
This rating remains a reference, knowing that several factors can also influence your comfort.
How to take care of your winter coat?
It is imperative to take care of your winter coat and clean it at least once a season. Usually, people do it in the spring when they store it. There is no need to go to the cleaners, you can use your own washing machine, even for down coats. There are cleaning products specially designed for different types of coats and materials. These are gentle products that will often also re-waterproof the garment. It is important to follow the instructions on the coat care label. We also advise you to consult our care section.
